Disability-inclusive social work practice

In this chapter, we fi rst provide an overview of the historical relationship between social work and disability. Then we briefl y discuss social work education as it currently stands and some of the issues it faces in being inclusive of disability. This contextual discussion will help the reader to understand the case studies presented later. The context in which social workers meet with, and intervene in the lives of, disabled people can be seriously fraught and troubled. The case studies in this chapter clearly detail the constraints, limitations and possibilities of an enabling and inclusive practice with disabled people living in rural and remote locations across Australia
