He asserts that whoever emerges from the election process as the next President of the USA will inherit a foreign-policy nightmare for which none of the candidates, Obama and McCain, appears to be particularly well equipped to address intellectually or politically. The obvious and immediate foreign-policy issues are the possibility of continuing ethnic and religious violence in Afghanistan, the gradual unraveling of Iraq, political instability in Pakistan, the deepening genocide in Darfur, and the ongoing and insurmountable conflict between Israelis and Palestinians.
