Empleo del mar en la estrategia terrorista: Amenazas en el Estrecho de Ormuz

Maritime terrorism is often thought as not possible to occur because of the complexity of maritime environment and due to not being considered as part of the strategy of terrorist groups. However, this assumption is far from reality, especially when we investigate the Strait of Hormuz and areas adjacent thereto. This study lists several cases of maritime terrorism, which occurred in different locations around the world, including Strait of Hormuz. The research examines the capabilities of terrorist groups who have presence in locations around the strait, their motivations and possible courses of action that might be taken in the future. In general, this study found that maritime activities, which have place in the Strait of Hormuz, are desirable targets for terrorist groups. Moreover, the paper identifies factors based on which terrorist targets can be reached, such as their operational sustainment, means and capabilities. Lastly, this investigation shows the need to understand the terrorism threat in order to eradicate this form of violence.Se podría pensar, que la complejidad del entorno marítimo, aleja a este medio de la estrategia de los grupos terroristas. Pero este pensamiento está totalmente alejado de la realidad. En especial, en el Estrecho de Ormuz. Esta investigación ha recopilado algunos casos de terrorismo marítimo en diferentes partes del planeta, y expone las capacidades, motivaciones, y los posibles cursos de acción de los grupos terroristas con presencia en el Estrecho de Ormuz y las áreas adyacentes. En general, la investigación encontró que el estrecho y las actividades que se desarrollan en este, son blancos deseables y los hallazgos sugieren que pueden ser alcanzados por el terrorismo. Así como también, se muestra que es necesario una adecuada comprensión del fenómeno por parte de la comunidad y organismos internacionales, para lograr acciones eficaces al tratar de erradicar esta forma de violencia
