This article seeks to discuss the use and role of metaphors in financial and macroeconomic discourse. It examines the nature ofconceptual and linguistic metaphors in this domain. It also provides a classification of metaphors and their typical collocations, andfinally it presents some strategies to understand the metaphorical nature of specialized languages and the ways in which conceptualmetaphors are realised in English and Spanish. Lack of awareness of the differences in use between languages may result in marked textsor may render a text unintelligible.
