This essay discusses the development of new perspectives on art music in Cuba and Brazil in the 1920s and 1930s, which emerge from the dialogue between critics Mário de Andrade and Alejo Carpentier, and the composers of their generation: Brazilians Heitor Villa- Lobos, Francisco Mignone, Camargo Guarnieri, Luciano Gallet, and Oscar Lorenzo Fernández, as well as Cubans Amadeo Roldán and Alejandro García Caturla. The writings about music by Andrade and Carpentier, published in newspapers and reviews of the time, as well as the crossed correspondence between critics and composers, unveil the nuances of cultural discourses of the time, as enunciated in public debates and in the intimacy of private letters.
