RUMBA LINGALA E A REVOLUÇÃO NA NACIONALIDADE

The intent of this article is to investigate the relationship between music a genre of music and the political situation in the Belgian Congo and the French Middle Congo in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, the volatile period approaching independence. Examining issues as diverse as technology, language and performance style, this article proposes that the genre called "Rumba Lingala," invented in the big cities and commercial centers, such as Léopoldville (Kinshasa) and Brazzaville, and influenced by foreign musical styles, particularly Cuban music, was revolutionary in how people thought about themselves. Despite the fact that the musicians used foreign elements in the creation of this new musical style - and perhaps because of this fact - the music gave birth to a powerful change in Congolese community consciousness. Thus, it provided a new terminology for conceiving the nation, a necessary factor in the mobilization of the population in the struggle for independence.O objetivo deste artigo é discutir as relações entre um gênero de música e a situação política do Congo Belge e do Moyen-Congo Français nas décadas de 1930, 1940 e 1950, período volátil aproximando independência. Abrangendo questões diversas, como tecnologia, língua, e estilo de desempenho, este artigo propõe que o gênero musical chamado ”Rumba Lingala”, inventado nas grandes cidades e centros comerciais, tais como Léopoldville (Kinshasa) e Brazzaville, e influenciado por música estrangeira, particularmente a de Cuba, tenha sido revolucionário no jeito de pensar sobre si. Apesar dos músicos terem utilizado elementos estrangeiros na criação deste novo estilo musical - e talvez por isto mesmo - a música gerou uma forte mudança na consciência de comunidade congolesa, fornecendo uma nova maneira de conceber a nação, fator necessário na mobilização do povo na luta por independência
