The intent of this article is to investigate the relationship between music a genre of music and the political situation in the Belgian Congo and the French Middle Congo in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, the volatile period approaching independence. Examining issues as diverse as technology, language and performance style, this article proposes that the genre called "Rumba Lingala," invented in the big cities and commercial centers, such as Léopoldville (Kinshasa) and Brazzaville, and influenced by foreign musical styles, particularly Cuban music, was revolutionary in how people thought about themselves.
