A importância dos dentes para três diferentes grupos de idosos

Although the amount of research on aged people's oral health has increased, many questions remain unanswered. One of them is the importance which aged people give to their teeth, as well as the activities directly related to the teeth and prostheses. This study aimed at examining the influence of teeth and prostheses on the life of three different senior groups. A total number of 90 interviews were performed: 31 interviews with independent senior citizens; 23 interviews with aged people at a philanthropic home; 36 interviews with aged people at a private institution. The data were submitted to the analysis of content and statistics. The results enabled us to conclude that the oldest people, from a chronological and social point of view, show a smaller variety of aspects to which the teeth are important. All groups presented quantitative and qualitative differences regarding the categories established. In all groups, the importance of teeth for eating and nourishing was the most recurrent, followed by appearance in the groups of independent senior citizens and aged people at a philanthropic home. Communication was the second most recurrent category in the group of aged people at a private institution. General health, comfort, suffering, smiling and laughing, as well as self-esteem, have also been mentioned in a large number of reports. Still, more studies are necessary in order to verify the reproducibility of the present results in other similar groups.Apesar do aumento do número de estudos voltados a saúde bucal de idosos, ainda persistem muitas lacunas a serem preenchidas. Uma delas, é a importância que os idosos dão aos seus dentes, e as atividades que são influenciadas por dentes e próteses. O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar a influência de dentes e próteses na vida de idosos de três diferentes grupos. Foram obtidas um total de 90 entrevistas, sendo 31 de idosos independentes, 23 de idosos de um lar filantrópico e 36 de idosos de uma instituição particular. Os dados obtidos foram submetidos a análise de conteúdo e estatística. Os resultados permitiram concluir que pessoas mais velhas do ponto de vista cronológico e social, apresentam uma menor variedade de aspectos para os quais os dentes são importantes; Os três grupos apresentaram diferenças quantitativas e qualitativas em relação às categorias estabelecidas; A importância dos dentes na alimentação e nutrição foi a mais freqüente nos 3 grupos, seguida da aparência nos grupos independente e asilado filantrópico enquanto que a comunicação foi a segunda categoria mais freqüente no grupo asilado particular. As categorias saúde geral, conforto, sofrimento, sorrir e rir além de auto-estima, também estiveram presentes em um número expressivo de relatos; São necessários mais estudos a fim de verificar a reprodutibilidade dos presentes resultados em grupos semelhantes aos abordados
