In the diploma thesis I consider various approaches and strategies, used by mathematics teachers and special educators, when they are working with pupils with learning difficulties in algebra, especially when providing individual assistance. In the theoretical part I describe the general and specific learning difficulties. I present the five-step model of assistance to pupils with learning difficulties that is implementation in the Slovenian elementary schools. Next, I describe some teaching strategies that are suitable for teaching algebra, especially when working individually with students with learning difficulties.
