Gender identity formation and the role of the pre primary school teacher

Men and women have a different roles and value in society. We can perceive through history that women are inferior and because of this are subordinate to men. In the theoretical part we first examined how men and womens relationships are being interpreted by theologians like De Beauvoir, Bourdieu, Butler and Ortner. Through different research we presented the development of gender differences, gender stereotypes and their influences on boys and girls. In the empirical part we researched through interviews with children their idea about how they see men and women. We examined the level of gender stereotyping with children, in which areas it is most common and if there are any differences in childrens thinking, comparing two types of kindergarten, the countryside and the city kindergarten. We also examined what we can do to stimulate gender equality in kindergarten. As we ascertained children's conceptions about gender, it seems it is very stereotypical, especially with their interests about play, looks and general expectations they have about boys and girls. We also ascertained differences between the types of kindergartens which give us important references for kindergartens and kindergarten teachers
