Words within words

[Extract:] 'Word' is a kingpin for every language, linking grammar and phonology. Pick any word, from dictionary or discourse. It will have a meaning, and also a grammatical characterization (morphological structure and syntactic function) and a phonological characterization (phonotactic make-up). 'Word' features in a hierarchy of grammatical units, established on grammatical criteria: (1) morpheme > grammatical word > phrase > clause > sentence It also features in a hierarchy of phonological units, established on phonological criteria: (2) phoneme(> mora) > syllable(> foot)> phonological word> intonation group Note that it is useful to recognize units 'mora' and 'foot' for some, but not for all, languages. As a general rule, grammatical and phonological criteria come together to create 'word'.
