Cohesiveness between members of a social unit is a defining characteristic of animal social organization. Dispersed social organizations, where members of a social unit spend the main part of their activity period apart, have only recently been distinguished from cohesive social organizations and are still poorly understood with respect to their ecological basis and reproductive consequences.
