Curiosity is a complex concept that has been discussed in the field of psychology and also in the fields of philosophy and religion. It is often used with negative connotations in daily speech. Requirements to support curiosity are often mentioned within pedagogical settings, without further definitions (Barnehageloven, § 2). This master’s thesis tries to explore the concept of curiosity as an aspect of quality in early childhood education (ECEC) for children under the age of 3. Curiosity is seen in this study as a (social) process. This process is examined with the use of constructing grounded theory (Charmaz 2006, 2014). This branch of grounded theory developed the traditional approach (Glaser and Strauss, 1968) with social constructionist views on knowledge creation. The aim of the constructed theory is to point out possible factors in relation to curiosity as an aspect of quality. I therefore conducted an informed grounded theory study (Charmaz, 2014) with a delayed literature review. As the main participants in this study are children under the age of 3, with a limited use of verbal language, I collected empirical data through visual ethnography and participating video observation while memo writing started. Out of the collected video materials, 47 sequences with a duration of between 15 sec and 10 min were chosen and became the empirical basis for further study. Initial coding was accomplished through the use of storyboards to describe the sequences with their main actions. These storyboards were compared with a method of contrast (Jaccard og Jacoby, 2010) in order to point out similarities and dissimilarities. With a reflexive approach, which contains problematization of the construction, I try to draw attention to influences of earlier understandings of curiosity. Through comparison I constructed a basic dramaturgy of the process, which contains three main ingredients: disruption, interaction, and solution. These are further investigated in terms of e.g. setting, movements, and interaction with peers or teachers. Theory is understood in this study as thick description of the process, using the metaphor of a map (Clarke, 2011). Through pointing out dissimilarities I constructed scales for these areas, which allowed me to organize sequences in relation to each other and to situate them in a map of the process. The aim of the map is to create a reference point for examining curiosity as an aspect of quality, by comparing situations in which curiosity occurs. Furthermore, I turn back to the sensitizing points of departure and create a reflective dialog with other dimensions of curiosity as seen from the fields of psychology, philosophy, and sociology, showing possible connections. This is to highlight the complexity of curiosity and to prevent that the concept and its possibilities are simplified when it comes to early childhood education for children under the age of 3.Neugier ist ein komplexer Begriff, der in den Bereichen Psychologie, Philosophie aber auch Religion diskutiert worden ist. Im alltäglichen Sprachgebrauch wird der Begriff oft mit einer negativen Eigenschaft verbunden. In pädagogischen Zusammenhängen dagegen wird oft die Unterstützung der Neugier gefordert, ohne dieses weiter zu definieren (Barnehageloven, § 2). Diese Masterarbeit versucht das Konzept der Neugier als ein Aspekt in der frühkindlichen Bildung für Kinder unter 3 Jahren zu erforschen. Neugier wird dabei in dieser Studie als (sozialer) Prozess verstanden. Dieser Prozess wird unter der Verwendung der Constructing Grounded Theory Methode (Charmaz 2006; 2014) untersucht. Dieser Zweig der Grounded Theory weiterentwickelt den traditionellen Ansatz (Glaser und Strauss, 1968) mit einer sozialkonstruktivistischen Sicht auf die Wissensbildung. Das Ziel der konstruierten Theorie in dieser Studie ist es, mögliche Faktoren innerhalb von Neugierprozessen als einer der Aspekte von Qualität zu beschreiben. Es wurde deshalb eine informierte Grounded Theory mit einer verzögerten Literatursuche durchgeführt. Nachdem die Hauptteilnehmer dieser Studie Kinder unter 3 Jahren mit einer begrenzten verbalen Sprache sind, sind die empirischen Daten durch ein visuelle Ethnographie und teilnehmenden Videoobservation eingesammelt worden. Aus dem gesammelt Videomaterial wurden 47 Sequenzen mit einer Dauer zwischen 15 Sekunden und 10 Minuten ausgewählt und bildeten die weitere empirische Basis für diese Studie. Initial Kodierung wurde durch die Verwendung von Storyboards durchgeführt, wobei die Sequenzen in ihre Haupthandlungseinheiten zerlegt wurden. Diese Storyboards waren der Ausgangspunkt um diese mit einer "Methode des Kontrastes " (Jaccard und Jacoby (2010) auf Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede hin zu vergleichen. Mit einem reflexiven Ansatz, der ein Problematisieren der Theoriekonstruktion enthält, wird dabei versucht auf die Beeinflussung durch bestehende Neugierkonzepte hinzuweisen. Durch den komparativen Ansatz wurde eine Grunddramaturgie für Neugierprozesse konstruiert. Diese besteht aus drei Hauptbestandteile: Disruption, Interaktion und Lösung. Diese Hauptbestandteile werden unter anderem in Bezug auf Setting, Bewegungen, und Interaktion mit Gleichaltrigen oder Lehrern genauer untersucht. Durch Vergleichen werden Skalen für diese Bereiche erstellt, die ermöglichen die Sequenzen in Bezug aufeinander anzuordnen. Theorie wird in dieser Studie als dichte Beschreibung des Prozesses mit den Metaphern einer Karte verstanden (Clarke, 2011). Das Ziel dieser Theoriekarte ist es, einen Referenzpunkt zu schaffen, anhand dessen Neugierprozesse verglichen werden können.Master i barnehagepedagogik
