El lugar de la representación en el campo arquitectónico : un problema de distancia

Interaction between inhabitant and architecture is based mainly on the work's physical occupation of space. However, there are other, less tangible, ways to approach the discipline. Architecture is also a field of cultural production and just as important as the materialisation of buildings is the construction of meaning(s) to allow them to be read and interpreted. Accordingly, this study investigates the concept of representation and its manifestation in graphic terms: an area of discussion that is arguably of some importance, as it allows us to reflect on the limits of architecture itself and its scope for interacting with the reality it is trying to shape. More specifically, on the basis of what are referred to here as critical representational practices, we call into question the role assumed by architectural representation in the context of modernity: a role that is closely bound up with the consolidation of the idea of project and its anticipatory nature, which conceives space as an availability and representation strategies as a symbolic area of remote operation. The representational practices analysed here take issue with this standpoint, assuming the impossibility of an exact correspondence between reality and representation, questioning the latter’s purported autonomy, and refraining from supplanting the tangible space and its qualities. In this context, through an analysis of Urban Re- Identification Grid (1953) by Alison and Peter Smithson; and The Manhattan Transcripts (1976-1981) by Bernard Tschumi —two works written in the second half of the 20th century, when the principles established by modernity were being revised— the study points to an opening-up in representation with respect to the self-referencing that usually predominates in architecture. This involves opening up to, and feeding off, actions and events in daily life: the dynamics of change that are constantly reshaping our reading and understanding of reality. Can the scope of the notion of project be reconsidered in line with the representation strategies adopted? Can we see architectural representation as being capable of establishing a dialogue between the concerns of the discipline and the contingencies of reality, reconsidering the distance that usually separates them? Can representations become a tool for critical reflection? These are the principal questions behind a study that argues for a flexible approach to architectural praxis: one that can engage in a dialogue with the current juncture without relinquishing the propositional nature of the project and its particularities. Thus, we suggest that the relationship between representation and project is an important framework for reflection on the field of architecture and its development in the present context, whose difficult comprehension places a demand on architecture for new strategies and procedures for operating in the midst of complexity.La interacción entre habitante y arquitectura se produce, principalmente, a partir de la presencia física de las obras en el espacio. Sin embargo, las posibilidades reflexivas en torno a la disciplina no se agotan en tal aspecto tangible. La arquitectura es también un campo de producción cultural y tan importante como la materialización de edificios es la construcción de sentido(s) que permite su lectura e interpretación. En esta dirección, la presente investigación indaga en torno al concepto de representación y su manifestación en términos gráficos; un área de discusión propuesta como relevante, pues nos permite reflexionar sobre los límites de la propia arquitectura y sus posibilidades de interacción con aquella realidad que intenta intervenir. En términos específicos, a partir de lo que aquí se denominan prácticas representacionales críticas, se plantea un cuestionamiento al rol asumido por la representación arquitectónica en el contexto de la modernidad. Una rol íntimamente ligado a la consolidación de la idea de proyecto y su carácter anticipatorio, que entiende al espacio como una disponibilidad y a las estrategias de representación como un ámbito simbólico de operación a distancia. Cuestionando esta postura, las prácticas representacionales aquí analizadas asumen la imposibilidad de una correspondencia exacta entre realidad y representación, discutiendo la pretendida autonomía de esta última, evitando suplantar al espacio tangible y sus cualidades. En este contexto, a través del análisis de Urban Re-Identification Grid (1953) de Alison y Peter Smithson; y The Manhattan Transcripts (1976-1981) de Bernard Tschumi -dos trabajos realizados en la segunda mitad del siglo XX, momento de revisión de los principios instaurados por la modernidad-, la investigación reconoce una apertura en el plano representacional respecto a la autorreferencialidad que suele predominar en la arquitectura. Se trata de una apertura que da cabida, que se nutre de las acciones de la vida cotidiana y sus acontecimientos, de las dinámicas de cambio que permanentemente reconfiguran nuestra lectura y comprensión de la realidad. ¿Es posible reconsiderar los alcances de la idea de proyecto en función de las estrategias de representación utilizadas?; ¿Podemos reconocer en la representación arquitectónica la capacidad de articular un diálogo entre las inquietudes disciplinares y las contingencias de la realidad, reconsiderando la distancia habitual que existe entre ellas?; ¿Pueden las representaciones convertirse en una herramienta crítica y reflexiva? Son las principales interrogantes que dan origen a una investigación que promueve una aproximación flexible al ejercicio arquitectónico, capaz de dialogar con la coyuntura sin renunciar al carácter propositivo del proyecto y sus especificidades. Así, se plantea que la relación entre representación y proyecto constituye un marco de reflexión relevante para aproximarnos al campo arquitectónico y su desarrollo en el contexto contemporáneo, cuya dificultad de aprehensión demanda a la arquitectura nuevas estrategias y procedimientos para operar en la complejidad
