The lack of a useful and accurate software infrastructure for measuring, modeling, and analyzing the performance of a wide variety of programming paradigms and architecture platforms is a critical issue for performance-oriented program development. Commonly, a cyclic process is employed to tune the performance of programs which includes the gathering of performance data through measurement and prediction and the analysis of the data collected on-the-fly or during a postmortem session to yield summary statistics and histories of program behavior.
