This paper analyzes the use of the courts by African population in Lima in- seventeenth century, as well as the church's role in the protection of their married life. The paper also explores the way ecclesiastical legislation decisively contribuited to the recognition of slaves as human beings. In order to achieve this purpose, the paper reconstruct the mechanisms of adaption and resistance used by slaves against the slavery system.
