The effect of project-based learning on students' writing ability of narrative text

This research is aimed to obtain the empirical evidence about the effect of projectbased learning on students&#8223; writing ability of narrative text at the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 kota Tangerang Selatan.The writer used quasi-experimental research which classified into a quantitative research. The population of the research was 360 students from nine classes. The sample was chosen by using purposive sampling technique which selected into the experimental class and the controlled class. It consisted of 40 students in each class. Sample of the research are X IPA 4 as experimental class and X IPA 6 as controlled class. Moreover, the writer used the pre-test and the posttest as the instruments of the research. In the experimental class, the writer used project-based learning through infographic in teaching writing of narrative text while in the controlled class, the writer taught the students by implementing the conventional teaching technique such as giving them description from students&#8223; book and asking the students to do the written exercises. In addition, the writer collected the data of this research by following some steps such as providing the pre-test, providing the treatments during conducted the research, and at the end of the research, the writer gave the post test. The data of the research were calculated by using Microsoft Excel 2011 and then analysed automatically by using SPSS version 21 with the significance level of 0.05. Furthermore, the mean score of experimental class is 78.67 and the mean score of controlled class is 71.12 (&#945; = 0.000044, &#945; < 0.05). The result of the research shows that the mean score of class using project-based learning is higher than the class without using PBL. So, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of Project-based learning on students&#8223; writing ability of narrative text at the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Kota Tangerang Selatan in the 2017/2018 academic year.
