The Ideational Meaning in the Mid-East Article of BBC News about Israel-Gaza Violence

Systemic functional grammar is a form grammatical description originally developed by M.A.K Halliday in his career spanning more than 50 years. It is part of a social semiotic approach to language. The term systemic refers to view of language as a network of systems or interrelated set of options for making meaning. The term functional refers to Halliday’s view that language is as it is because of what it has evolved to do. (see meaning). SFG states that there are three modes of meaning, those three are called meaning of language. The three meaning of language are the ideational/experiential, the textual, and the interpersonal meaning. From explanation above I intend to analyze the ideational meaning in the Mid-East article of BBC news about Israel-Gaza violence by using transitivity system and more focuses only in type of processes. In analyzing ideational meaning of the data, I use transitivity system. There are three components of transitivity system; first is the processes themselves which are represented by verbs, second is participants involve in the process are represented by nominal group, and the last is circumstances associated with the process are represented by adverbial group or prepositional phrase. Processes which are represented by verbs become the central of transitivity. After classifying the data based on the processes of ideational meaning, I found 155 clauses. There are 43 material processes, 25 mental processes, 18 behavioral processes, 24 relational processes, 45 verbal processes. However, I did not found meteorological process. Three components of ideational meaning: Participants or things (living or non-living, abstract and concrete) involve in the process are represented by nominal group, the processes or ‘going on’ (what the things are or do) which are represented by verbs, and circumstances associated with the process are presented by adverbial group or prepositional phrase. Hopefully it will help them to increase their achievement and get another resource in studying ideational meaning. And To give an additional reference in teaching functional grammar especially ideational meaning and give suggestion for further research concerning in analyzing ideational meaning and I hopes that this research will be helpful to the readers
