THE IMPLEMENTATION OF MAPPING WORDS STRATEGY TO INCREASE VOCABULARY MASTERY

The objectivity of this research is to find out the effect of using mapping words on the English vocabulary of eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Wita Ponda. This research applied quasi-experimental design. The samples were 42 students; 22 students class VIIIA as the experimental group and 20 students of class VIIIB as the control group selected using purposive sampling technique. The data were analyzed statistically in order to find out the significant difference of the students’ achievement before and after treatment. The mean score of the experimental group on the pre-test was 39.91, while the control group was 45.62. Furthermore, the mean score of the experimental group on the post-test was 80.22, while the control group was 72.45. In addition, the t-counted value was 8.8. By using degree of freedom (df) 40 and 0.05 level of significance with one-tailed test, it is indicated that the value of t-table was 1.684. It is found that the t-counted is higher than t-table. It means that the hypothesis was accepted. In other words, using mapping words can improve the vocabulary of eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Wita Ponda.Keywords: Vocabulary, Mapping Words. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk mengetahui efek dari mapping words pada penguasaan kosa kata siswa kelas 8 di SMP Negeri 1 Wita Ponda. Penelitian ini menggunakan model quasi-experimental. Sampel terpilih terdiri dari 42 siswa; 22 siswa kelas VIIIA sebagai kelompok eksperimen dan 20 siswa dari kelas VIIIB sebagai kelompok kontrol dipilih menggunakan tehnik purposive sampling. Data ini di analisa secara statistik untuk mengetahui perbedaan yang signifikan dari pencapaian siswa sebelum dan sesudah perlakuan. Nilai rata-rata dari kelompok eksperimen pada tes awal adalah 39.91, sementara pada kelompok kontrol adalah 45.62. Selanjutnya, nilai rata-rata dari kelompok eksperimen pada tes akhir adalah 80.22, sementara kelompok kontrol adalah 72.45. Selain itu, nilai t-hitung adalah 8.8. Dengan menggunakan degree of freedom (df) 40 dengan menggunakan tingkat signifikansi 0.05 dengan uji one-tailed tes dan ditemukan bahwa nilai t-tabel adalah 1,684. Ditemukan bahwa t-hitung lebih tinggi di bandingkan t-tabel. Ini berarti bahwa hipotesa di terima. Dengan kata lain, menggunakan Mapping Words dapat meningkatkan kosa kata siswa kelas delapan di SMP Negeri 1 Wita Ponda.Keywords: Vocabulary, Mapping Words
