Electroanalysis : abstracts of the 8th International Conference [on Electro-Analysis (ESEAC)] held from 11 to 15 June 2000 at the University of Bonn, Germany

For the eighth time, the International Conference on ElectroAnalysis (ESEAC) welcomes participants from all over the world. It is not only the first time that Germany with its long tradition in electrochemistry and analytical chemistry is hosting this conference but it is also the first meeting of this series to be organized in cooperation with the Society of Electroanalytical Chemistry (SEAC). Because of the special year we invited colleagues to present plenary "name" lectures as a bridge between the past and future in our field. It was difficult to select just six electroanalytical chemists from among the many eminent scientists of the last 30 years. But we chose R.N. Adams, I.M. Kolthoff, V.G. Levich, H.-W. Nürnberg, G.J. Patriarche and W. Simon as the subjects of the lectures because of their significant contributions both to the development of the armoury of electroanalytical techniques as weH as to expanding their field of application. Moreover, they strongly promoted the teaching of electroanalysis and the establishment of "electroanalytical schools" in their countries. Nowadays, electroanalysis is driven by problem-oriented as well as method-oriented developments. Despite all temporary or regional ups and downs in the academic and public standing of analytical sciences, I am convinced of a bright future for our field. New demands and challenges in life sciences and material sciences - from high spatial resolution at the molecular level to the design of microdevices for high throughput screening - are not only on the horizon but already on some of our lab benches. The scientific contributions surnmarized in this book represent an excellent basis for very stimulating discussions during ESEAC 2000 and afterwards, for continuing joint research activities and for establishing new networks of electroanalytical groups all over the world.
