Aligning Talent Management Strategy and Strategic Capability to Create Competitive Advantage and Improve Organizational Performance: A Systematic Review

High-performing organizations understand the value of aligning talent management to organizational strategy by conducting key talent management practices, such as integrating talent management across the organization. Failure to integrate and synchronize talent management strategies with the organization’s capabilities could negatively impact organization performance. The purpose of this dissertation was to describe talent management strategies to be implemented to create competitive advantages in organizations. The research question is, “What talent management strategies can managers implement to create competitive advantage and improve the organizational performance?” Research-based view (RBV) is the applied theoretical lens. This dissertation performed a thematic synthesis by identifying and synthesizing themes from 45 primary studies. The findings are including definition of talent, talent management strategies, factors affecting talent management, and the advantages of an alignment between talent management strategy and organizational strategic capability. The themes of the synthesis are assessment, antecedent, alignment, and advantage. An updated conceptual model was developed to capture the connection between findings, propositions, and themes. Future research should extend to identify what good practices of talent management have emerged and what models may be suitable for different organizational settings
