Recycling Awareness, Attitudes, and Behaviors: Results from a Survey of Households in Saudi Arabia

Recycling behavior is influenced by many factors, but not limited to, awareness and knowledge, attitudes, and convenience. This study examines some of the factors that influence female households in Saudi Arabia to recycle using a mixed-methods research approach. This was done by an online survey created using SIUE Qualtrics software and distributed through different social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, and WhatsApp application by an anonymous link. A total number of 356 respondents participated in the survey, and a voluntary follow up interview of a total of 15 respondents. The variables tested are demographics, recycling awareness, recycling attitudes, recycling sources of information, the existence of nearby recycling facilities/bins, and concerns about environmental problems with households recycling behaviors. The data analyzed using different statistical tests using the Chi-squared test, Logistic regression, and Fisher’s exact test. The results showed an association between recycling awareness and knowledge and the existence of nearby recycling facilities/bins within reach with recycling behaviors. The research finding is useful to promote awareness and to enhance recycling programs in Saudi Arabia
