The Effect of Student Age and Performance Level on Parental Involvement in Suzuki Programs

Parents play an influential role in their child's achievements in that they can enhance their experiences and learning. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of student age and performance level on perceived parental involvement in Suzuki programs. A secondary purpose was to investigate contributing factors such as parental gender and social economic status. A survey was designed to determine parental involvement level and its relationship with students age, book level, parental gender and annual household income. The survey was distributed by Suzuki teachers (N = 39) to practicing parents in Suzuki programs within the United States. The survey gathered information about perceived parental involvement and demographic information regarding participants and their children. Fifty-eight surveys were submitted for analysis. The results from this study indicate that parents are still involved as children age, but in a more passive role and parental involvement changes when students reach an intermediate level of performance. Results also indicate that parents of middle to high household income are involved in Suzuki programs
