Examining the Impact of Masculinity Conformity Norms on Adolescent Males and Adult Men: A Systematic Literature Review

This systematic review sought to explore the empirical research on the influence of masculine conformity on male adolescents and adults, and how such conformity contributed to the outcomes in the areas of relationships, behavior and psychological well-being. Sixteen articles were selected that met the inclusion criteria with a total population of 3,617 participants, ranging in age from 11 to 33 years old, who were educated, middle-class Caucasian males. The validated instruments utilized were the AMIRS, the MRNI-R, and the CMNI scales, along with other scales to measure academic achievement, gender role conformity, self-esteem, and aggressive and risk-taking behaviors. Despite sample limitations, several recurrent themes were identified as having a strong impact on relationships, behavior, and psychological well-being. The findings highlighted the need for additional research in more diverse cultures in order to gain a full understanding of the influence of conformity to traditional masculinity norms have on different cultures
