International audienceThe genus Pneumocystis comprises uncultured, highly diversified microfungal organisms able to attach specifically to type-1 alveolar epithelial cells and to proliferate in pulmonary alveoli provoking severe pneumonitis. The pathogenic potential of Pneumocystis species, especially of the human-associated Pneumocystis jirovecii, has stimulated a growing interest in these peculiar microfungi. However, a comprehensive understanding of basic biology and pathogenic power of Pneumocystis organisms calls for their recognition as natural, complex entities, without reducing them to their pathogenic role.
