National audienceVarious methods of artificial inoculation with Sclerotinia trifoliorum were tested, mainly on red clover, in order to choose one able to differentiate levels of cultivar resistance. Plants were 2 months old and grown in flat pots. They were kept at R.H. 100 p. 100 and 18 °C during all or part of the tests. Ascospores gathered in the field in october-november were able to produce foliar symptoms, the intensity of which was greatest on the susceptible cultivar, « Levezou », than on the more resistant « Tetri ». Unfortunately, ascospores are not suitable for selection tests because ascospores are not yet easily produced in vitro. Sclerotia from pure cultures were not, or were weakly, pathogenic.
