L’anisotropie est souvent utilisée en sismologie comme proxy de la déformation des roches. Elle se développe lorsque des minéraux acquièrent une orientation préférentielle. C’est le cas de l’olivine des péridotites du manteau qui s’aligne selon la direction des flux de matière. Néanmoins, l’anisotropie observée en tomographie peut aussi provenir d’hétérogénéités chimiques non résolues par les ondes sismiques longues périodes : elle s’apparente alors à̀ de l’anisotropie artificielle.
