L’exposition des cellules endothéliales aux irradiations conduit à l’apoptose via un mécanisme dépendant de l’acide sphingomyélinase et le céramide. L’apoptose radio-induite des cellules endothéliales participent à la toxicité intestinale et à la régression tumorale après des fortes doses d’irradiation. Cependant, le mécanisme par lequel l'apoptose des cellules endothéliales conduit à la radiosensibilité de l'épithélium intestinal ou des cellules tumorales reste mal connu.
