Prilikom projektiranja potpornih konstrukcija, podzemnih konstrukcija, zabatnih stijena i drugih potpornih zidova za osiguranje iskopa, od velike je važnosti pravilna i točna procjena bočnih pritisaka na spomenute konstrukcije. U ovom radu razrađene su Coulombova i Rankineova teorija određivanja aktivnih pritisaka i pasivnih otpora u koherentnom i nekoherentnom tlu te njihova primjena u praksi.
