This paper analyses Toni Morrison’s novel Beloved on the basis of slavery and the consequences that it had on the former slaves in the novel. The first part of the paper deals with the history of slavery and the methods with which the slaves were controlled by the slave owners, and with the significance this history had in Toni Morrison’s Beloved. The analysis introduces Sethe, Baby Suggs, Paul D, and Stamp, respectively. Each paragraph focuses only on one character from the novel and is divided into three parts and explains the characters’ past and the atrocities they suffered from slavery.
