Specific legislative proposals on substance misuse are being submitted to the Government by the Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly. The Cabinet Committee on Social Policy recently discussed the proposals and a health impact assessment has been commissioned in conjunction with Northern Ireland, as part of the process of developing a legislative basis for minimum unit pricing. The assessment will study the impact of different minimum prices on a range of areas such as health, crime and likely economic impact. The Government said it is committed to dealing with alcohol misuse in Irish society and the widespread harm it causes
