In the context of bioeconomy, the discovery and study of plant-cell wall degrading enzymes is particularly relevant for the use of lignocellulosic biomass for industrial purposes. In this respect, functional metagenomics has proven to be a powerful tool to discover new enzymes from a variety of microbial ecosystems, as exemplified by work performed on the gut of the termite Pseudacanthotermes militaris.
