The second volume of the revised memoirs of the Congregation of the Mission in China presents the history of the French mission entrusted to the Vincentians in order to replace the suppressed Jesuits. They arrived in 1785. Persecutions were common and violent, resulting in martyrdom and the expulsion of foreign missionaries. Both French and Portuguese establishments were thereby eliminated
