The archiepiscopacy of Kalocsa was founded by Saint Stephen. The town played an important role in the medieval history of Hungary. The Turkish invasion brought devastation to the town, which could no more regain its medieval splendour. It belonged to the archbishop's estate, who built a new town in the course of a century. They raised palacesin baroque and copfstyle around the Italian Baroque cathedral. Today, two thirds of the approximately 19 000 inhabitants are Roman Catholics. The fate of the sacred monuments was determined by the flood in February, 1941 and the 1945 political change.
