Kalocsa belterületének szakrális kisemlékei

The archiepiscopacy of Kalocsa was founded by Saint Stephen. The town played an important role in the medieval history of Hungary. The Turkish invasion brought devastation to the town, which could no more regain its medieval splendour. It belonged to the archbishop's estate, who built a new town in the course of a century. They raised palacesin baroque and copfstyle around the Italian Baroque cathedral. Today, two thirds of the approximately 19 000 inhabitants are Roman Catholics. The fate of the sacred monuments was determined by the flood in February, 1941 and the 1945 political change. The study discusses 19 public sacred monuments that still exist, and one that has already perished. They are works of fine art standing in the baroque town centre. Some of them are several centuries old, while some are quite new. Their cultis not very developed, they are wreathed on the occasion of state and church holidays connected to them. Monuments standing outside the centre in the village-like districts reflect a somewhat more ruraltaste. The monuments are taken care of by women from the neighbourhood
