The honour of Our Lady of Reed as a Hungarian shrine dedicated to Mary was renewed in the middle of the 20th century in Gyula. The present place of today's icon was chosen on the basis of remembarance, and its first feast was held on the first Sunday of October in 1951. The renewal of the veneration of Virgin Mary started at a time when atheist power organized with the help of Soviets tried to break and eliminate Hungarian identity and religious traditions. This situation encouraged László Pintér, the vicarius of that part of the Nagyvárad Diocese which was left in Hungary after the Trianon Peace Treaty to establish new shrine dedicated to Virgin Mary.
