The feast of Virgin Mary's engagement (23. January) is traditionaly not among the most important Marian Feasts in the Catholic Calendar. Besides the birthday of Virgin Mary (8. September) und feast of the Assumption (15. August) it completes the life-turns of Virgin Mary. Within the liturgical year it is a transition between Christmas time und Cameval time. The engagement of Mary presents the archaic layers of the sacred tradition. The essay is the survay of the literature und geogpraphical spread of this custom.
