This thesis draws attention to a range of factors that influence why, how and when young migrant and refugee men engage with statutory and non-statutory sources of welfare and methods of immigration control as they ‘become adult’ in Europe. It does so through mixed methods qualitative research which took place over a period of 18 months in two cities in England and Italy. The four papers that constitute the body of the thesis draw on: critical policy-analysis; participatory research based in three support institutions; arts-based research conducted in collaboration with museums; and semi-structured interviews with unaccompanied young men, policy makers and practitioners.
