Fear has become an ever-expanding part of life in the West in the 21st Century. The research addresses this slightly disquieting, invisible and often forgotten component of architecture. 'Onheimelijk' or 'uncanny' serves as a 'positive' counterweight to traditional values (light, sight, visibility): it functions as a creative engine to generate meaning in architecture. The current 'Culture of Fear' calls for a better understanding and confrontation with imminent threats: it does not intimidate but rather stimulates growth of human creativity through architecture. 'Uncanny' facilitates an intentional attitude exploring possibilities and highlights an affective side of architecture.status: publishe
