Twenty per cent of the UK population are living with, or are at risk of, type 2 diabetes (T2D), with estimated annual NHS treatment costs of £8.8 billion. This rising tide identifies an urgent need to reduce uncertainties around the causes, prevention, and treatment of T2D. A patient-centred approach is a cornerstone of high quality diabetes care and is mirrored in research by an increasing focus on patient and public involvement. The James Lind Alliance (JLA) has a 13-year history of collaboration with patients, carers and clinicians identifying and prioritising unmet research needs to drive improvements in clinical care.
