This contribution traces the development of the language of Ancient Greek literature from its prehistoric origins down to the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The dialects and registers of epic, elegy, and epigram, of choral and monodic lyric, of iambus, comedy, and tragedy, and of prose are described in separate sections; also treated are some of the major metrical patterns. © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Inc
