Mediation of the effect of malaria in pregnancy on stillbirth and neonatal death in an area of low transmission

Type of data: Routinely collected antenatal clinic data Data source: Shoklo Malaria Research Unit, Mae Sot, Tak, Thailand. Setting: Antenatal clinics in refugee and migrant communities on the Thailand-Myanmar border, where malaria is endemic and transmission is low. Time period of data collection: 1986 - 2015 Primary research question: What is the association between malaria in pregnancy and stillbirth in an area of low malaria transmission? Description of primary exposure variable: Malaria in pregnancy (vivax or falciparum). Women were screened for malaria weekly throughout pregnancy (finger-prick blood samples examined by a trained microscopist). Malaria was defined as the presence of asexual parasites in the peripheral blood (per 500 leukocytes or 1000 erythrocytes). Description of primary outcome variable: Stillbirth (a baby born dead from 28 weeks’ gestation), further classified as antepartum (death in utero) or intrapartum (death during labour).
