The Rorschach Inkblot Method: Exploration and Evaluation as an Instrument in Neuropsychological Assessment

This paper reviews relevant literature pertaining to the use of the RIM in neuropsychology, both in clinical and research capacities. Specifically, it is examined in the context of its use in neuropsychological patient populations, in studies examining brain structure and/or function, and in its relation to neuropsychological abilities and/or functions. Based on this review, the RIM is evaluated in terms of its utility as an instrument in neuropsychological assessment. Overall, the findings indicate that the RIM alone cannot provide direct measures of neuropsychological functioning in the same way traditional neuropsychological tests can. However, it can provide valuable data to inform interpretation of a traditional neuropsychological battery. The strongest evidence for the use of the RIM appears to be for the purposes of patient care and planning, treatment planning and remediation, and research. To a lesser degree, there is some evidence for its use in neuropsychological diagnostic purposes. Based on the findings reviewed in this paper, it is hoped that these findings may help neuropsychologists better understand the utility of the RIM in neuropsychological assessment
