King was born in Scarborough. At 13 he left school for work. He would go on to own 10 ships, the first cotton mill in Maine and start a bank. King served in the Massachusetts Legislature between 1795 and 1819 representing Thomaston then Bath in the House and then Lincoln County in the Senate. In 1819 King was voted head of the Constitutional Convention, and in 1820 he was elected Governor. King served just one year before taking a position with the Federal Government.
