The diversity of American drama today is its most noticeable characteristic. At the present time anyone looking for an underlying unity seems doomed to failure. Generally speaking, of course, that drama is greatest which is vital to the greatest number of people . Possibly dramatic geniuses will eventually arise to interpret this period in its larger aspects. In the meantime, all drama, just as life and thought, is fragmentary; and playgoers must content themselves with divers inspirations from wildly differing minds
