The Restoration period in England was an historical turning point, witness to the imminent change from the old monarchial system giving the upper hand to the nobility, to a new social order based on industrialism and the rising lower classes. Never again would there be an absolute monarch, nor would land wealth and power be lodged solely in the upper classes. The Restoration was a time when aristocratic society had polished itself to a high degree of wit and intellectual achievement. The comic plays of this period were a perfection of the Comedy of Manners School of Drama, and as a product of the Restoration mind, provided an absorbing tool for studying the times
