ENDOGENIZING DAILY MODAL CHOICE TO EXPLAIN VEHICLE OWNERSHIP DECISIONS

This paper focuses on quantifying and endogenizing the impact of accessibility to personal activities in order to explain vehicle ownership decisions. It is common practice trying to explain vehicle ownership employ socio demographic information as explanatory variables. Compared to this state of the art, our contribution is to deeper explore the explanatory power of mobility-related attributes: we test to which extent the ownership of a mode of transport is influenced by the quality of travel offered by this mode for serving one’s activity pattern. Eventually, this knowledge should contribute to an improved prediction of the impact on modal choice given by the introduction of a new alternative in the choice set: how much a new sustainable mode should facilitate daily trip making to convince a person to make transition to that sustainable mode (e.g. e-bike)?
