Eleven ungrazed shallow limy range sites were studied as to species composition, edaphic characteristics, and range condition. These stands were located in the shale-limestone region of north-central Kansas. The sites were dominated by little bluestem and big bluestem. Edaphic conditions were marked by high surface rockiness, basic pH, low mulch, and low water-retaining capacity.
