Many mutations in human genes on the X chromosome are responsible for a variety of diseases. Of these, intellectual disability (ID) is by far the most implicated with a prevalence of 2-3% in the Western population, making ID a leading socio-economical problem of the Western world. ID can be subdivided into syndromic ID, where other neurological, metabolic or structural symptoms are present, and non-syndromic ID where no other major symptoms are observed.
