Franciscan spirituality reached impressive heights in the sixteenth and seventeenth century Spain with such authors as Francisco de Osuna, Alonso de Madrid and others. Thanks to the intense relationship between Spain and the Netherlands during this same period in the context of the Spanish Empire, to which both territories belonged, in the Low Countries their works were first published in their original language (Spanish and Latin) and then in translations, mostly into Dutch and French but also into Latin and English, from the sixteenth to well into the eighteenth century.
