In this chapter we re-view the range of theoretical stances across European countries and discuss how different frames of thinking impact the therapist and the development of the profession nationally and internationally. The central argument is how a music therapist’s musical identity is core to their work. Through clinical examples the authors demonstrate the fundamental significant of therapists’ listening to and thinking about music. While many have written about the art and science of music therapy, in this chapter the authors propose to detail the central musical component of the work of a music therapist, as this is integrated into clinical practice.status: accepte
