Using a daily diary study, we examined the within-individual relationship between skill discretion and employee well-being (i.e., work engagement and emotional exhaustion), and the moderating role of work value orientation. Ninety-nine service worker s completed a general survey and daily surveys over five consecutive days. Results of multilevel modeling showed that skill discretion was positively related to work engagement at the end of the work day, but was unrelated to emotional exhaustion. In addition, we found that skill discretion was more positively associated with work engagement in employees who hold a predominant intrinsic (rather than extrinsic) work value orientation.status: publishe
